Our Story

At our core, Makuta is more than a clothing brand — it’s a community-driven movement built on strength, resilience, and a shared commitment to those facing the toughest battles. Founded by myself, Tom, and my partner Bethan, Makuta was born from the hardest challenge of my life — a challenge I never thought I’d have to face.

In 2022, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma.

The journey that followed was unlike anything I could have imagined.

It wasn’t just the physical toll — the grueling treatments, the endless hospital visits, the pain, and the fatigue.

It was the mental and emotional battles that shook me to my core.

I fought through it twice. But the third time, with a stem cell transplant on the horizon, it pushed me further than I ever thought possible.

In those darkest moments, when everything else felt out of my control, I had to rely on one thing: community. The strength of the people around me, the support from my loved ones, and the belief that I wasn’t alone kept me going. But I realized something devastating: Too many people fighting cancer don’t have that support.

They don’t have the connection, the strength, or the hope they need to get through it. Cancer is not just a physical battle — it’s an emotional war. And for so many, they’re fighting it alone.

That realization became our turning point.

During a recovery trip to Thailand, I received a call from a close friend undergoing intense cancer treatment. He was fighting hard, but there was no one to help him with the mental and emotional toll. No community. No support. No place to turn.

We knew then that we had to do something. People need more than just medical care; they need community. They need love. They need hope.

The idea for Makuta came from my own experience — it came from the simple, everyday things that made me feel human again. As I lost my hair, I wore hats every single day. That was the one thing that gave me comfort and confidence.

It was a symbol of strength.

A symbol of being seen and understood.

What started with just hats as a symbol of that strength soon grew into something bigger — much bigger. A full clothing brand, designed not just to offer comfort, but to offer choice, to offer identity, and to offer a community for people who understand what it means to fight cancer.

Makuta is not just about clothing.

It's about bringing people together. It’s about creating a space where no one fights alone, where cancer isn’t just something you “survive,” but something you can thrive through — with others by your side.

Every piece of clothing is a symbol of strength. Every item worn is a declaration that we are stronger together. And each sale helps support Lymphoma Action, a charity committed to providing the support services that so many need but so few have access to.

We are creating a movement — not just a brand.

A place where warriors, survivors, families, and supporters can feel connected, heard, and empowered. Because when you’re fighting cancer, you don’t need pity. You need power. You need connection. You need community.

And that’s what we’re here to provide.

Together, we are stronger than cancer.

Let’s unite, uplift, and make a difference.

With all our strength,

Tom & Bethan
